Authorized Gas Tester (AGT)

The AGT Certification Program is an intensive, practical course designed to qualify personnel to safely test for atmospheric hazards in the workplace. Participants will learn how to prepare, calibrate, and utilize specialized gas detection equipment to evaluate environments prior to confined space entry, hot work, and general hazardous area operations.

The course bridges the gap between theoretical knowledge of atmospheric science and the practical application of gas testing equipment in the field. By integrating the OH&S management framework of ISO 45001 with the highly specific technical requirements of ANSI Z117.1, participants will learn not just how to test, but the crucial why behind continuous monitoring, gas stratification, and permissible exposure limits.

Core Learning Objectives

Upon successful completion of this certification, participants will be able to:

• Understand Atmospheric Hazards: Identify the properties and behaviors of flammable (LEL/UEL), toxic, and asphyxiating gases.

• Apply Global Standards: Navigate and apply the requirements of ISO 45001:2018 (Hazard Identification and OH&S Risk Assessment) and ANSI/ASSP Z117.1 (Atmospheric Testing Requirements).

• Operate Equipment Proficiently: Select, inspect, calibrate (bump test), and operate portable gas detection instruments.

• Execute Testing Protocols: Perform initial and continuous atmospheric monitoring, including understanding gas stratification and vapor density inside confined spaces.

• Interpret and Act on Data: Accurately read monitor displays, interpret alarms, and authorize or halt work based on permissible exposure limits (PEL) and immediately dangerous to life or health (IDLH) conditions.
