This page details the first step in your QHSE professional journey: the Certified QHSE Trainer® (CQHSE-T®).
Overview
The Certified QHSE Trainer® (CQHSE-T®) credential is designed for experienced QHSE professionals who aspire to train, facilitate, and educate others in QHSE principles and practices across diverse sectors. It validates your expertise not just in QHSE, but crucially, in the art and science of effective instruction.
Our overarching objective with the CQHSE-T® is to ensure competence in instructional design, effective training delivery, and the accuracy and relevancy of QHSE content across various industry domains. This certification ensures trainers can build capacity, transfer vital knowledge, and promote a strong safety culture.
Core Competencies Across All Levels: Regardless of the trainer level, all Certified QHSE Trainers are expected to demonstrate mastery in:
- Instructional Design & Curriculum Development: The ability to create effective learning experiences.
- Adult Learning Principles: Understanding how adults learn best to maximize engagement and retention.
- Competency-Based Training Assessment: Skills in evaluating learners’ practical abilities and understanding.
- QHSE Subject Matter Expertise: Deep knowledge in the specific QHSE topics they teach.
- Compliance with National & International Training Standards: Adherence to relevant educational and industry guidelines.
- Continuous Improvement and Learner Feedback Integration: A commitment to refining training based on feedback and evolving best practices.
Certification Validity & Renewal:
- Validity: All levels of the CQHSE-T certification are valid for 3 years.
- Renewal Requirements: To maintain your trainer certification, you’ll need to complete 20 hours of relevant Continuing Professional Development (CPD) related to training methodologies, instructional design, QHSE updates, public seminars, or conference presentations. You’ll also submit an updated portfolio with current training delivery logs.
Requirements
Achieving your Certified QHSE Trainer® (CQHSE-T®) involves meeting specific prerequisites and successfully completing a comprehensive assessment. The requirements vary depending on the level of trainer certification you pursue.
General Examination Format (Applies to all levels, adapted for scope):
- Practical Component: A micro-teaching demonstration to showcase your delivery skills.
- Written Component: An assessment covering instructional design theory and comprehensive QHSE content knowledge.
- Portfolio Evaluation: A thorough review of your submitted training materials, participant feedback, and delivery logs.
Level 1: Foundation QHSE Trainer
Qualification Prerequisites:
- Certification: You must hold a Certified QHSE Field Specialist® (CQHSE-FS®) certification or a higher-tier QHSE certification.
- Experience: A minimum of 1 year of documented experience in relevant QHSE field operations.
- Training: Completion of a recognized Train-the-Trainer (TTT) course (minimum 16 hours). Further you must hold relevant training certificate.
- Portfolio: Submission of evidence for at least 1 successfully conducted training session with documented participant feedback.
Level 2: Intermediate QHSE Trainer
Qualification Prerequisites:
- Certification: You must hold a Certified QHSE Field Specialist® (CQHSE-FS®), Certified QHSE Professional® (CQHSE-P®) or Certified QHSE Manager® (CQHSE-M®) certification.
- Experience: A minimum of 2 years in a QHSE supervisory or dedicated training capacity.
- Training: Completion of an Advanced TTT or Instructional Design course (minimum 24 hours).
- Portfolio: Submission of evidence for 3 or more diverse training programs you’ve developed and delivered, including supporting materials and feedback.
Level 3: Certified QHSE Master Trainer
Qualification Prerequisites:
- Certification: You must hold a Certified QHSE Manager® (CQHSE-M®) certification, or have achieved Certified QHSE Trainer Level 2 and have at least 2 years of experience as a certified trainer at that level.
- Experience: A minimum of 5 years in a strategic or instructional design QHSE role, demonstrating significant influence on training systems.
- Training: Completion of advanced courses focusing on Instructional Design combined with Adult Learning Principles (minimum 40 hours combined).
- Portfolio: Submission of a complete training framework, a detailed training delivery log, and comprehensive participant evaluations that reflect your strategic impact.
Suitable For
The Certified QHSE Trainer® (CQHSE-T®) is ideal for QHSE professionals looking to leverage their expertise to educate others, with specialized levels catering to different scopes of training responsibility:
Level 1: Foundation QHSE Trainer
This level is suitable for CQHSE-FS®, CQHSE-P® holders, or experienced HSE trainers with a primary focus on field-level operations.
- Scope of Training: Authorized to deliver standardized, high-demand QHSE trainings, including:
- H2S Awareness
- Working at Height
- Confined Space Entry
- Basic Fire Safety and Firefighting
- Hazard Identification & Risk Assessment (HIRA)
- HACCP Awareness

Level 2: Intermediate QHSE Trainer
This level is for CQHSE-FS®, CQHSE-P®, CQHSE-M® holders, or equivalent professionals with mid-level facilitation experience who wish to expand their training scope.
- Scope of Training: Authorized to deliver all Level 1 trainings, plus more complex and analytical topics such as:
- Risk Assessment & Control Methodology
- Advance H2S Awareness
- Advance Working at Height
- Advance Confined Space Entry
- Advance Basic Fire Safety and Firefighting
- Advance Hazard Identification & Risk Assessment (HIRA)
- Advance HACCP Awareness
- Advance Emergency Response Training
- Advance Field-Specific Operational Safety Training
- HACCP Implementation & Internal Auditing
- Accident/Incident Investigation techniques
- Permit to Work (PTW) Systems
- Environmental Aspects & Impact Analysis
- Advance Industrial Training (e.g., specialized equipment operation safety, process safety management specifics relevant to various industries)
Level 3: Certified QHSE Master Trainer
This is the highest trainer level, designed for Senior QHSE Managers, Corporate Trainers, and Learning & Development Leaders who shape organizational training strategies.
- Scope of Training: Authorized to deliver all Level 1 and Level 2 trainings, in addition to possessing the capabilities to:
- Design full QHSE curricula for entire organizations.
- Evaluate and optimize comprehensive training strategies at a corporate level.
- Mentor and develop other Level 1 and Level 2 QHSE Trainers.
Application & Certification Process
Your journey to becoming a Certified QHSE Trainer certificant begins with a straightforward application process.
1. Apply Online: You can apply for certification at any time by selecting the ‘My Profile’ portal located in the top right-hand corner of any QHSEA.ORG webpage. Simply create your account to get started.
2. Application Review & Eligibility: The QHSE Association will thoroughly review your application once it is submitted and the initial payment has been made. It is crucial that you meet all the specified certification requirements to be deemed eligible. Once your application is approved, candidates have one (1) year to schedule and successfully pass the certification’s examination.
3. Examination Details:
- Examination Format: The assessment includes a practical micro-teaching demonstration, a written assessment on instructional design theory and QHSE content knowledge, and a portfolio evaluation.
- Examination Fee:
- For Level 1 (Foundation): $600 USD
- For Level 2 (Intermediate): $1,000 USD
- For Level 3 (Master): $1,800 USD This fee covers your attempt(s) at the certification exam and the initial issuance of your certificate upon passing. This can be purchased during the application process as an an application and exam/exam bundle combo option, or it can be purchased after your application is approved.
- Exam Re-sit Fee: Should you need to re-take the exam, a re-sit fee of $200 – $600 USD (depending on level) will apply per attempt.
4. Achieve & Maintain Certification: Candidates who successfully meet all prerequisites and pass the examination are officially awarded their Certified QHSE Trainer® certification at the respective level and become proud QHSE Association Certificants.
To support the continued advancement of the safety profession and ensure the recognition and value of QHSEA credentials, an annual credential maintenance fee of $100 USD is assessed to credential holders for all Trainer levels. This fee allows you to retain active use of your QHSEA credentials.
Furthermore, all credential holders must remain up-to-date with changes in professional practice by sharing their activities to earn recertification points. Your CQHSE-T® certification is valid for 3 years. At the end of this period, a recertification (renewal) fee of $200 USD will be required, along with evidence of your accumulated recertification points/CPD hours, to renew your certification for another 3 years.
